Here's a full summary of the series. Don't read it unless you want to know the end!
This story follows the second semester of two high school seniors, Jaron Reiter and Nora Andrews. These two have gone to school together their entire lives, but have never been friends.
Nora Andrews is the kind of girl who almost seems invisible. She is very shy and is the type that hides in the corner. Of course, since she attends a big school no one really notices. It also doesn't help that Nora was born without properly working vocal chords and cannot speak (she IS able to hear, however).
Jaron Reiter is a reasonably sucessful vocal musician at the high school, but is only moderately popular. Jaron is constantly striving to be perfect, sucking up to the 'important people', and stepping on whoever he has to in order to get where he wants to go. He's not exactly a mean person, but he definately needs to get his priorities and morals straight.
As the second semester of their senior year begins, Nora and Jaron find themselves in the same english class, and are assigned as partners on the final project. This project is a large percentage of their grade, forcing Nora and Jaron to spend long periods of time together. At first, Jaron is cold and rude to Nora, treating her with extreme disrespect, and Nora grows more and more agitated at his antics, using her inability to communicate verbally against him. But, as time goes on, the two teenageers begin to grow on each other, and, of course, fall in love.
Close to the date of their project's deadline, Nora and Jaron are seen talking by a group of the school's varisty track stars. The boys, knowing how badly Jaron wants to fit in, call Jaron over and say they would like to hang out with him. Stunned, Jaron agrees. After a few parties and a few ditched study sessions with Nora, the boys put Jaron up to a stunt to publicly humiliate Nora in front of the entire school, promising him eternal popularity, and money for a recording session. Reluctantly Jaron agrees, thinking that Nora will understand.
After Jaron pulls the stunt (still to be thought of), Nora is devastated and heartbroken. She won't even look at Jaron. Nora coldly agrees to still finish the project and help present it, however.
It's almost graduation, and the music deparment's final concert is approaching. Nora volunteers to help hand out programs at the concert. After the choir performs their final number, the director announces Jaron as the winner of a large scholarship to a very prestigious music school, and asks Jaron to sing a solo number. Jaron then dedicates and sings a song for Nora and publicly apologizes and announces his love for her. What's so special about this song? Jaron found it in Nora's journal. It was a poem she wrote, and Jaron set it to music. Just for her. Awww.
